Bed bug inspection in Newcastle

An inspection settles the question before you spend money on treatment. A technician searches the bed, the furniture nearby and the rooms either side, tells you whether it really is bed bugs, and says how far they have got.

On its own a visit is typically £60 to £120. Book the treatment with the same firm and the fee is sometimes deducted.

Is this the right service?

Pay for an inspection when

  • The bites are real but no bug has ever turned up, and fleas, mites or a rash are still possible.
  • You have just moved into a let, or brought home a second-hand bed or sofa, and want to be sure.
  • Your upstairs or downstairs neighbour has them, and you need to know if they have crossed the floor.
  • You let a shared house and want the affected rooms pinned down before anyone is paid.

Skip it and book treatment when

  • You have caught a bug, kept it, and the bites are all in one bed. Most firms inspect at the start of the first treatment visit anyway.
  • You are a council tenant waiting for your housing service, which will assess first.

What gets checked in a Newcastle home

In a Tyneside flat, a good inspector looks beyond your bedroom: at the skirting boards on the shared floor, at the stairs to an upper flat, and at where pipes come up from the flat below. They should ask whether your neighbours have noticed anything.

In student houses in Jesmond, Heaton and Sandyford, every bedroom is checked, along with the sofa in the shared living room, which is often where bugs pass from one person to the next. In city centre flats the focus is on the bed, the sofa and any luggage that has been away recently.

What happens on the visit

  1. Questions first

Where the bites happen, when they started, and whether anyone has travelled or bought furniture recently.

  2. The bed

Mattress seams, labels, the divan base or frame joints and the headboard, often with a torch and a thin card or blade.

  3. Around the bed

Bedside tables, skirting boards, plug sockets, curtains and the sofa if anyone has slept on it.

  4. The finding

What was found, which rooms are involved, and what treatment would be needed, with a price.

Not sure it is bed bugs? Ask for an inspection and we look for a local firm to come and check.

Get these six in writing

Put the same six points to every firm and their quotes become easy to compare.

Which rooms were checked
So you know whether a clear result covers the whole home or just one room.
What was found
Live bugs, eggs, skins or spots, and where. Photos help if a landlord needs to see them.
How confident they are
An early infestation can be hard to find. Ask what they would do if they found nothing but bites carry on.
The treatment they suggest
Spray, heat or a mix, with the reasons.
The price if you go ahead
And whether the inspection fee comes off it.
Monitors left behind
Some firms leave interceptor cups under bed legs to catch bugs if the search was inconclusive.

Straight answers

How long does an inspection take?

Usually 30 minutes to an hour for a flat or small house, longer for a shared house with many bedrooms.

Can a technician tell bed bugs from fleas or carpet beetles?

Yes. The bugs, eggs and droppings of each look quite different, and an inspector can usually tell you on the day. Bites alone are not enough to say.

What should I do before the inspector comes?

Leave the bed as it is, do not throw anything out, and keep any bug you have caught in a sealed bag or jar. Moving furniture around can spread them into other rooms.

What if nothing is found?

That is useful too, but it is not a guarantee. If bites continue, ask about leaving monitors under the bed, and speak to a pharmacist about the bites.

Will the inspection be free if I book treatment?

With some firms it is. Ask before the visit so there is no surprise.

Can the council inspect for me?

Newcastle City Council does not list a public bed bug service; it lists bed bugs as a job agreed with its housing service. Council tenants should report it to their housing office. The council page has the current position.
