Bed bug heat treatment in Newcastle

Heat treatment clears bed bugs by raising the temperature of a room, and everything in it, past the point that bugs and their eggs can survive. It is usually done in a single long visit, with no insecticide sprayed on the bed.

For a one-bed flat it typically costs £700 to £1,100, rising to £1,000 to £1,700 for a three-bed house.

Is this the right service?

Heat is a good choice when

  • Bugs have come back after a spray course, or you suspect they no longer respond to the usual products.
  • They are deep inside a sofa, divan base or headboard that spray cannot reach well.
  • You want it done in one day, for example before a new tenant moves in or a guest room is let again.
  • Someone in the home would rather avoid insecticide in the bedroom.

It may not suit you when

  • The budget is tight and the problem is caught early in one room. A spray course is often enough.
  • The flat has a lot of heat-sensitive belongings that cannot be moved out, such as instruments, candles or medicines.

Heat in Newcastle homes

Much of Heaton, Jesmond, Sandyford, Fenham and Benwell is made up of Tyneside flats: one flat downstairs, one upstairs, each with its own front door. Heat works well in these, because each flat can be sealed and heated on its own. The technician will still want to know whether the flat above or below has had bites, because the floor between them is shared.

Flats in tower blocks and newer city centre buildings need extra planning. A firm will check the power supply, whether the heaters can be carried up, and whether the building has sprinkler heads or smoke detectors that must be covered. Ask about this when you book, not on the day.

How a heat treatment day goes

  1. Survey and price

The technician confirms bed bugs, measures the rooms and gives you a fixed price and a list of what to remove.

  2. Preparation

You take out anything that heat could damage, and wash and dry bedding and clothes from the affected rooms.

  3. Heating the rooms

Heaters and fans bring the rooms up to temperature and hold it there while sensors check the coolest spots, often for several hours.

  4. Cool down and check

Rooms are cooled, furniture is put back, and many firms return or call a few weeks later to confirm the bites have stopped.

Get these six in writing

Put the same six points to every firm and their quotes become easy to compare.

Which rooms are heated
A named list, so a room is never skipped because it was not on the plan.
The target temperature and how it is measured
Ask how many sensors are used and where they go, including inside the mattress and sofa.
What you must remove
Electronics, aerosols, medicines and anything that melts. A clear list avoids damage claims later.
Any insecticide used as well
Some firms add a residual product at skirting boards. Know if this is part of the job.
How long you are out of the home
Usually most of a day. Plan for pets too.
The check afterwards
Whether a follow-up visit or call is included, and what happens if bites carry on.

Straight answers

Is one heat treatment enough?

Often, yes, because heat kills eggs as well as live bugs, which is why it is usually a single visit. Ask what the firm does if you see signs again in the following weeks.

Will heat damage my things?

Furniture, mattresses and clothes are normally fine. Electronics, candles, aerosols, vinyl records, medicines and some plastics should come out first. Your technician gives you a list.

How hot does it get?

Firms bring rooms up well above the temperature bed bugs can survive and hold it there until the coldest spots, inside furniture and mattresses, are hot enough. The exact target varies by firm, so ask what theirs is and how they measure it.

Can I heat-treat only the bedroom?

If an inspection shows the bugs are only in that room, yes, and it costs less. In shared houses and flats where people sleep in different rooms, whole-home treatment is safer.

Is heat better than spray?

Neither is always better. Heat is faster and avoids insecticide on the bed; a spray course costs less. Compare both in the Newcastle price guide.

Does the council do heat treatment?

Newcastle City Council lists bed bugs only as a job agreed with its housing service, not as a public service, and does not list heat. Check the council page or ask your landlord.
