Bed bug treatment in Newcastle
Woken up with bites, or found something in the mattress seams? Send your postcode and what you have found. We look for a bed bug technician who covers your area, then tell you who they are before passing anything on.
A free matching service, not a pest control firm. We find a bed bug technician who covers your street, tell you who they are, and pass nothing on until you say yes. How we work

Who sorts it in Newcastle?
It depends on who owns the home. Pick the one that fits you.
Report it to your housing office first
Newcastle City Council's pest control page lists bed bugs only as a job "to be agreed with YHN", Your Homes Newcastle, which has managed the council's homes. So council tenants have a route the rest of the city does not.
Report it through your usual housing repairs line or online account and ask what treatment is offered and when. The council has been bringing housing management back in-house, so the name on your letters may change; the reporting route still applies. If you would rather pay a private firm, or need it sooner, we can still find one.
Tell your landlord in writing, today
The council does not list a bed bug service for private homes, so treatment in a private let normally comes from a private firm. Who pays depends on your tenancy and on how the bugs arrived; in a shared house it usually falls to the landlord, because one room cannot be treated alone.
Email your landlord or agent with what you have found and when. If they are slow to act, Shelter explains your options. Check with the council or your landlord before paying for anything yourself.

A private firm is the usual route
With no public bed bug service listed for owner-occupiers, the job goes to a private technician. You choose the method: a spray and steam course over two or three visits, or heat treatment in one long visit.
An inspection first is worth it if you have bites but no bugs. In a Tyneside flat, tell the technician whether you live upstairs or down, and whether the neighbours have noticed anything.
You will need a firm that reports in writing
Landlords, letting agents, hotels, hostels and short lets all fall outside the council's list, and most will want a written report for tenants, guests or insurers.
Ask for every affected room and the rooms either side to be included, a record of what was found and used, and a return visit. Our landlord and business pages go into the detail.
From the Newcastle City Council pest control page, read 28 October 2026. Services change, so check with the council or your landlord. This is general information, not legal advice.

Upstairs, downstairs: the Newcastle flat problem
Walk down almost any terraced street in Heaton, Jesmond, Fenham or Benwell and you will see pairs of front doors side by side. These are Tyneside flats: one flat on the ground floor, one above, in a house that looks like a single terrace from the street (background).
For bed bugs, that layout matters. The upper flat's bedrooms usually sit over the lower flat's, with one floor between, and the heating pipes often run through both. If your neighbour upstairs or downstairs has bed bugs, it is worth having your flat checked too, and a good technician will ask about them before treating yours.
The same goes for student houses in Sandyford and Arthur's Hill, where several people share a living room, and for city centre blocks where flats share risers and corridors. Have bites but cannot find anything? Read bites with no signs of bed bugs.
- The floor between. One floor separates the upper flat's rooms from the lower flat's. Gaps at the skirting and round floorboards are a short crawl.
- Pipes and cables. Heating pipes and wiring often run up through both flats in the same channels, and bugs follow them.
- The party wall. Each pair shares walls with the next pair along the street, upstairs and down.
Not to scale. Layouts vary from street to street; your technician will look at the real one.

Before you pay anyone, it helps to know what you are dealing with. Based on NHS guidance and the British Pest Control Association. Not sure what a bed bug looks like? See our guide.
Strip the bed and look at the seams
Run a torch along the mattress piping, the labels and the corners of the base. You are looking for black dots like felt-tip marks, pale empty skins, or the bugs themselves.
Check the headboard and the gaps near it
Bed bugs hide close to where people sleep: behind the headboard, in screw holes, along the skirting board behind the bed.
Keep anything you catch
Put it in a sealed bag or a jar. A technician can identify it in seconds, which saves you paying to treat the wrong pest.
How the job gets done
We are a free matching service, not the technician. How we work.
Inspection
Someone qualified looks at the bed and the rooms next to it, says whether it is bed bugs, and leaves you a fixed price and a list of jobs to do first.
Preparation
Everything washable from the bedroom goes through a hot wash and the dryer, into sealed bags, and the floor by the bed gets cleared.
Treatment
A spray and steam visit, or a day of heat. Keep out of the treated rooms until the technician says they are ready.
Follow-up
A spray course needs a return visit about two weeks later for newly hatched bugs. Heat jobs are usually checked once.
